Singer Anup Ghosal Known for Tujhse Naraz Nahi Passes Away at 77 Yore

Anup passed away on Friday from multiple organ failure after being admitted to a private hospital in south Kolkata for several days for age-related illnesses.

NEW DELHI: Bengali singer Anup Ghoshal passed away here on Friday, according to his family. He is most known for the song "Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi" from the 1983 movie "Masoom," which immortalized the lyrics in multiple Satyajit Ray musicals. He was seventy-seven. His two daughters live on.

Anup passed away at 1.40 pm from multiple organ failure after spending the previous few days in a private hospital in south Kolkata for age-related illnesses. Ghosal, who ran successfully for the Trinamool Congress seat in the Uttarpara assembly election in 2011, left behind two daughters.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her sorrow over his passing. "I convey my sincere sorrow and sympathies on Anup Ghosal's passing who had sung in Bengali, Hindi and other languages," she said.

Ghoshal, a well-known vocalist, demonstrated his flexibility by singing songs by Kaji Nazrul Islam, Rabindranath Tagore, and contemporary Bengali artists. He had been a playback vocalist for Satyajit Ray's albums Hirak Rajar Deshe (Kingdom of Diamonds, 1980) and Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (The Adventures of Goopy and Bagha, 1969).

Also lending his voice to the film Sagina Mahato (1971) was director Tapan Sinha. Ghoshal performed the playback vocals for a number of other noteworthy movies, such as Fuleswari, Marjina Abdalla, and Chhadmabeshi. Still, he captured hearts all over the nation with his performance of Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi in the Gulzar-directed Masoom.

In addition to Bengali and Hindi films, he sang in Assamese and Bhojpuri films, among others.

In 1945, Anup Ghoshal was born. In his early years, his mother Labanya Ghoshal introduced him to music for the first time. Pt. Sukhendu Goswami later taught him classical music, and he went on to win the MA in classical music at Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata.

Anup Ghoshal was chosen by Mamata Banerjee to run in the 2011 Uttar Para assembly seat during his brief political career. After that, he won, but he didn't run for office again.
